Originally rejected due to its 'strong, coarse, American aroma', Ernest was bred by Ernest Salmon in 1923. Its "New World" flavour profile of apricot, citrus and spice was not desirable at the time, and it was deemed a poor substitute for the control hop of the trials, Fuggles. In the context of today's brewing, these bold, fruity flavours are more at home, and Ernest could yet prove itself as a valuable addition to the contemporary brewing world.

The English Pale series is designed to showcase new English hops. The folks at Yakima Chief Hops have supplied us with Ernest and Endeavour hops before they are released for general sale.

Each beer focuses on a different hop and is brewed using the same simple malt bill and clean yeast strain. The beer is custom-designed to allow the unique character of each hop to shine through.
